GRIT: The Power Of Passion And Perserverance - Angela Duckworth

Why do naturally talented people frequently fail to reach their potential while other far less gifted individuals go on to achieve amazing things? This is a question I have asked myself severally, as I have watched people less talented than I am in certain areas do things I could easily have done in my sleep (Of course I'm exaggerating).

The (open) secret that has been revealed in this book is that outstanding achievement is not about talent, but it is as a result of passionate persistence. In other words, GRIT.

What makes high achievers successful, MacArthur Fellow Duckworth writes, is grit. Talent is important, she acknowledges, but talent multiplied by grit is what builds skill, and skill multiplied by grit equals achievement. Duckworth believes that talent or genius is innate, but “grit grows.”

In three sections, she defines grit, then shows how it can develop “from the outside in” and “from the inside out.” She mixes descriptions of her own experience with notable success stories, such as that of quarterback Steve Young, and discoveries in psychology, creating a highly readable guide to achievement.

This book has been my way of taking you out for a coffee and telling you what I know,” Duckworth concludes.

GRIT is a book that is packed with examples of people who have ascended to the top from behind because they consistently worked on bettering themselves every day.

The one thing I will take from this book is this: I don't have to shy away from doing something because I am not a master at it. All I need to have is the persistence, perserverance, discipline, commitment and dedication to get better at THAT thing and I will eventually be better than someone who only has talent in that area but doesn't continuously improve himself or herself in it.

My take-away from this book in one sentence is this: my efforts will take me further than any of my talents will.

In other words, to be a high achiever you don't need to be talented. What you need is passion + perserverance + persistence + discipline + dedication + effort = GRIT.
